The goal of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture is to re-enliven Natural Law in agriculture, bringing the farmer, the process of farming and the environment in complete harmony with each other.
Natural Law is the unseen intelligence of Nature that upholds and nourishes all of life. Vedic agriculture will produce Vedic food, the purest, most nutritious, and most vital food available anywhere. Vedic food is vibrant in the total potential of Natural Law. It brings the intelligence of Nature directly into our human physiology to create a mind and body capable of living higher states of consciousness—the full potential of life.
What does it mean to grow food in accord with Natural Law? What do we mean by the intelligence of Nature?
When we look around us we see the expression of intelligence everywhere. The whole intricately functioning universe is guided by the Laws of Nature. Every day the sun rises, maintains its perfectly orderly relationship with all the other planets, and nourishes all life on earth through the photosynthetic process.
Photosynthesis is the basis of the entire food chain—it maintains life through the functioning of the laws of physics, chemistry, and biology, and through the complex interactions of the plant and animal kingdoms.
The sequence of nucleotides in the human DNA is another example of the expression of orderly intelligence which maintains the functioning of our entire physiology with all its billions of cells and processes.
Wherever we find intelligence expressing itself in Nature, we find that it has organizing power. It is the organizing power of the Laws of Nature that allows Nature to function. The same organizing power of Nature is at the basis of our personal success and fulfillment in life.
The greater the expression of intelligence, the greater and more powerful its organizing power. That is why the Unified Field of Natural Law, discovered by modern physics as the most fundamental field of Nature's functioning-the total potential of Nature's
intelligence—has the greatest organizing power.
In Maharishi Vedic Science, this Unified Field of Natural Law is called Veda. Vedic food, or food grown in accord with the principles of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture, embodies this total potential of Natural Law. The totality of Nature's intelligence is stored in the plant through the technologies of Vedic Agriculture.
When this plant is taken as food and properly digested and metabolized, then this intelligence of Nature is made available in the human physiology to create Vedic consciousness. Vedic food creates a Vedic physiology capable of living its full potential—enlightenment.
The Purpose of Food
Why do we eat in the first place? Maharishi explains that we eat to gain a blissful, healthy state of life in higher states of consciousness. We eat to imbibe the intelligence of Natural Law into our own physiology. There are very few things in life that have such a direct influence on us as our food. For this reason, food is a central part of Vedic life.
There is a saying in the countryside of India: "Mind depends on the quality of food that we eat." For full development of mind, we need the full range of Natural Law to be developed in the food. This will ensure that our thinking and behavior will always be in an evolutionary direction.
There is another Vedic Expression from the Ramayana—a central text of one of the 40 branches of the Veda and the Vedic Literature—which says: "Whatever we eat, our Devatas eat."
From the research of His Majesty King Nader Raam, we know that the Devatas are the embodiments of the Laws of Nature within our human physiology. They are the intelligence of Nature governing our physiological functioning. Whatever we eat, it nourishes this intelligence. The quality of food will then determine the quality of our body's functioning intelligence.
The Hazards of Modern Agriculture
Among all the species, man is the only one who has the freedom of choice to act in accord with Natural Law or to violate Natural Law. He has freedom of choice, and he must live with the consequences of his choice.
Modern agricultural technologies have burdened the environment and threatened our lives with harmful chemical fertilizers, non-degradable pesticides and herbicides, and genetically modified organisms.
Chemicals have destroyed the life of the soil, causing wide spread erosion and sterility, disrupting all the natural processes that bring vitality and balance to the food.
The process of genetic engineering has upset thousands of years of perfect evolution in accord with all the Laws of Nature, ruining farming traditions in every country, and introducing foreign and unnatural genetic material into seeds, plants, and the people eating those plants.
A central emphasis of modern agricultural practices is on
destruction—destroying weeds, destroying insects, destroying bacteria. This destructive sentiment gets incorporated into the food, in the same manner that meat contains the fear of dying that the animal experienced before being slaughtered.
This destructive quality is there on the biochemical level and on the more subtle level of the inner intelligence of the plant. When we eat this type of food, it creates destructive tendencies both in the individuals and in the nation as a whole.
Maharishi says that modern chemical agriculture, by disrupting the natural processes and excluding the wholeness of Natural Law, produces food that creates partial brain functioning. "Functional gaps" or "functional holes in the brain" are created as a result of the full intelligence of Nature not being present in the food. This destroys the creativity and harmonious expression of life for those who eat this type of food.
Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture seeks to solve today's agricultural crisis by building on and extending the laudable practices of organic farming to encompass the full range of life.
Life is holistic. The full range of life must be taken into account in every activity. In Vedic farming, the quality of consciousness of the farmer and his subtle relationship to his crops and the environment are taken into account.
Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture is more than a vision of what agriculture could be; it's an understanding of what life is and how Nature functions. It is crops thriving in the fullness of Natural Law and offering this full potential for the good of mankind.
Vedic Food-Super Food for all Levels of Life
What can we expect from this type of farming? We can discover a key to the untapped potential in food and what it can create in terms of health, vitality and creativity for all mankind.
Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture uses Vedic technologies to transform the quality, nutritional value, and vitality of food to its maximum value, enlivening the intelligence of Nature within the plant itself and providing the deepest, most vital aspects of Natural Law to all those who partake of the food.
Vedic Organic food will be fresh food—food that has been ripened on the plant or tree for maximum nutritional value. Scientific research has demonstrated that vine and tree ripened food-food that is freshly picked-is higher in nutrients. Vedic food will be radiating freshness, vitality and harmony.
Vedic foods, Maharishi explains, will be more easily digested and more thoroughly metabolized because of the liveliness of Natural Law in them. The result will be a level of nourishment to mind, body and spirit far beyond the nutritional impact of foods produced with existing farming methods.
With Maharishi Vedic Organic farming, every organ and tissue in the body, all seven levels of the Dhatus as expressed in Maharishi Vedic Medicine, will receive more complete nutrition. This will promote a higher level of health and higher level of consciousness—a Vedic life in enlightenment. Every family will want to eat this food-the best and safest the world has to offer.
John Konhaus is president of Maharishi Vedic Organic Agriculture Institute. The Institute's goal is to promote and certify Vedic Organic food.
