W e have been celebrating Guru Purnima year after year. Every year,
symbolic of whole ness, this full moon comes. We have been celebrating
according to our eternal tradition of Vedic wisdom, the eternal tradition
of that continuum of life which life is.
And to understand that, we have all these systems of gaining
knowledge— Veda, Vedanta, Yoga, Karma Mimansa , Samkhya, Vaisheshik—all
these different aspects of Vedic knowledge. We have counted them to be 40
in number, and there are branches, sub-branches, leaves, and every grain
of the fully developed, ever-growing tree of life. The ever-growing tree
of individual life and ever-growing tree of cosmic life, both go the same
way: The individual is cosmic. In its cosmic dignity, the individual has
infinite freedom, infinite capacity of thought, speech and action.
One could think—one could Be. Thought is a faint aspect of Being. The
field of Being is the infinitely ever-expanding galactic universe. This is
human capacity.
This is really what we mean by Golden Jubilee—jubilation of that
realization about the reality of everyone’s life. This is the jubilation
we have been celebrating on one full moon every year, year after year.
After so many years, today we find ourselves in a position that we can see
the golden glare of reality of life—the cosmically omnipresent golden
glare, golden jubilation.
Rishi, Devata and Chandas are three values, with their
unified wholeness in terms of Samhita, togetherness. Whosoever is
meditating and has been in contact with Meditators, they know there is
something special. And what is that? The vision of Totality of life in
terms of Samhita of Rishi, Devata and Chandas. This
being the reality of life, this reality has been sung day after day, night
after night, week after week, year after year, Guru Purnima after Guru
Purnima.
Today we want to sing a song which is shining gold, shining golden
light everywhere. For this we have an expression in Rik Veda: Anor-amiyanyn.
Smaller than the Smallest is that light of consciousness. Smaller than the
Smallest is present within the reality of every grain of creation. Each
particle of creation is a particle that constitutes infinity, and
innumerable infinities.
So the span of life is Anor-amiyanyn and Mahato-mahiyan—Smaller
than the Smallest and Bigger than the Biggest. Bigger than the Biggest
means ever-expanding universe. And it has been expanding since one could
throw one’s imagination in the unbounded eternal field of time and
space—the galactic universe—and its character is golden, pleasantly
shinning gold.
We are celebrating today the Golden Jubilee of Guru Dev in this reality
of life of everyone individually, of every society collectively, of every
nation collectively, of the whole world, of our galaxies, of our universe.
The desire has been since the beginning of the Movement to let this
real, golden hue of life, which is the reality of everyone’s
self-referral consciousness, be the daily experience of everyone in every
field of thought, speech and action. This was the aspiration, that when
everyone is like that, why not everyone should be like that.
The world has been wrongly guided. Education has not been very
satisfactory. Everything depends on education. When the child comes, he
doesn’t know anything. Whatever you tell him, that is what he knows.
Education is very deplorable because it perpetuates that lethargic field
of life which is darkness.
We have been talking for years about the inadequacy of modern
university education. (See the Purpose of Education by Maharishi in 1963.)
The word "university" has been a very great misnomer since the
dawn of the university concept. Man’s consciousness— which is in
reality unbounded, infinite, ever-expanding, ever-glowing— has been put
into compartmentalized values of knowledge.
Physiologists say that when you see, one part of the brain functions;
when you hear, some other part of the brain functions. It’s the same for
all the five senses of gaining knowledge and five senses of acting upon
that knowledge. All this is segregated experience.
Nothing gives holistic experience except Transcendental Meditation,
which allows the active mind to settle down. The settled state of the mind
is like the settled state of all the waves on the ocean—self-referral in
its absolute silence—having the potential for any strong wave or weak
wave. Any wave can come out from the surface of that settled ocean. This
is the secret that education everywhere has to learn afresh.
All these university presidents are very proud: "Yes, come to my
campus, I’ll give you anything you want." But anything is a
segregated field of knowledge, either physics or chemistry or all these
different segregated areas. And the worst of this university education is
that it gets into smaller and smaller areas as the student advances in his
education. In the end he gets a Ph.D., he gets some rewards, but what has
come out of him?
The top man in the world in the field of mathematics, physiology or
chemistry gets the Nobel Prize. After some time that man gets toppled down
by another man, who comes out to say, "That Nobel Prize was given,
but the theory was wrong. The right theory is what I’m saying now."
So many Nobel Prizes have been condemned, because the very quality of
education is compartmentalized.
Every university is proud of having so many departments and so many
Ph.D.’s, but the whole thing is a fraud. I have to use this word, while
we are celebrating the Golden Jubilee of Guru Dev, because the present
state of life has been non-life, darkness. It is just perpetuating
darkness, perpetuating darkness, perpetuating darkness.
We have tried in these 40–50 years, in all parts of the world, to
show that our program is the program which uncovers the total reality of
life—which is brilliance, which is bliss, which is fulfillment, which is
invincible. We have to promote this knowledge. In order to promote this,
year after year we have been making programs. Now this year also we are
making programs for the whole mankind to rise to the reality of life.
Education is in the government’s hands, and every government is
devoted and dedicated to its constitution. So now I am challenging all
governments today. I am challenging all the universities today. I am
challenging all that is existing about life in the field of knowledge and
in the field of action. The whole thing is very ugly as far as the reality
of life is concerned, which is bliss consciousness. This reality is called
Parame Vyoman, the self-referral value of Transcendental Consciousness.
Today when we are celebrating the Golden Jubilee, we are in a very
joyful state of Being, we are in a very joyful state of thinking, we are
in a very joyful state of speaking, we are in a very joyful state of
action. We want to correct the wrongs on earth first, and from this earth
what will radiate is the light of supreme quality of gold, which is
invincible, self-sufficient, lively within everyone.
Gold Coin Commemorates Golden Jubilee
From an Address by Dr. Eike Hartmann
Issuing a golden coin commemorative of Guru Dev will mark for all times
the turning point in the history of mankind, when money, which as Maharishi
says is today in the hands of the wrong people and put to the wrong use,
will be reconnected with its splendid source and recharged with an
inexhaustible energy and ever-increasing prosperity.
In deepest gratitude to Guru Dev and Maharishi, who in 50 years of
transformation have opened wide the golden gates of Heaven on Earth, the
commemorative coin will carry the picture of Guru Dev.
On the front of the coin is a beautiful image of Guru Dev with many rose
gar-lands sculpted in very fine relief. The text around his head reads
"His Divinity Brahmanand Saraswati
Golden Jubilee."
The one-ounce coin has a diameter of 38 mm, and is crafted out of pure
gold by the best and oldest mint in the world.
