U.S. Surgeon General Speaks at Prevention Forum
On June 3, U.S. Surgeon General David
Satcher gave the keynote address at a special forum cosponsored by the
Congressional Prevention Coalition and the Institute of Science,
Technology and Public Policy, Maharishi University of Management.
Moderated by Dr. John Hagelin, the theme of the event was "Achieving
Parity in Health Care for Minority Populations: Prevention of Hypertension
and Heart Disease."
Dr. Robert Schneider, M.D., Dean of the College of Maharishi Vedic
Medicine, was also a featured speaker. Dr. Schneider presented his
NIH-funded research on the effectiveness of the Transcendental Meditation
technique in reducing cardiovascular disease in high-risk minority
populations.
The event was well attended, including members of Congress and their
staff, and provided an excellent setting for the Nation’s
highest-ranking physician to hear the latest research on the benefits of
the Transcendental Meditation program for this high-risk population.
Meditation Experiment Arrests Crime
The June 1999 issue of the
peer-reviewed Social Indicators
Research reported on a dramatic drop
in violent crime in Washington, D.C. during the summer of 1993.
Researchers had predicted in advance that the calming influence of nearly
4,000 practitioners of the Transcendental Meditation and
TM-Sidhi programs attending an 8-week conference would reduce violent
crime by over 20 percent in the city.
After the project, statistics showed that the rate of violent crime
decreased by 23 percent during the experimental period. The odds of this
result occurring by chance are less than 2 in 1 billion. A 27-member
project review board composed of independent scientists and civic leaders
rigorously analyzed the experiment.
Ideal
Education in Victoria
For the past 12 years, the
Victoria School for Ideal Education
has successfully offered
Consciousness-Based education in British Columbia, Canada. The School has
excelled, qualifying for government funding as a Class 1 independent
school.
To receive and maintain Class 1
certification, every aspect of the School’s operation is periodically
inspected by the Provincial Ministry of Education. The most recent
Ministry report stated: "It is the opinion of the evaluator that the
school is performing a fine service to the community." The report
goes on, "The students learn in a calm, caring atmosphere. It was
obvious to the external evaluator that the school practices the philosophy
and purposes that are stated in the Parent Hand-book."
Andrea Kober, a parent, says, "I
feel this school really develops individuality and creativity. I
especially appreciate the warm, friendly environment."
The teachers of the school are all
Provincially certified. Additional specialists teach physical education,
art, music and French. Class size is a maximum of 12 students, permitting
quality individual attention for each child. Ginny Lovick, a Governor of
the Age of Enlightenment, has served as principal of the School since its
founding.
New Video Promotes the TM Program
A new documentary-style videotape on
the Transcendental Meditation technique has just been completed. The video
has a contemporary, visually rich style, and has been received very
favorably by marketing and video professionals throughout the United
States. The 28-minute presentation graphically highlights practical
benefits—reduced stress, clearer thinking, better health, and better
relationships—making the tape a great resource for introducing family,
friends, employees and employers to the TM technique.
"It was a rewarding experience to create this video," says
Adam Pressman, one of the producers, "I hope that it will help
inspire millions of people through-out North America and the world to
learn the Transcendental Meditation technique."

Bethesda Maharishi Vedic Center Prepares for Opening
The new Maharishi Vedic Center in
Bethesda, Maryland is taking its final form, in preparation for a
September opening. Bob and Beverly LoPinto have spearheaded and managed
the project on a daily basis, raising $1.8 million in construction funds
from 100 families. The LoPintos are the first State Administrators for
Maharishi Global Administration through Natural Law in North America to
complete an ideal home for bringing Maharishi’s knowledge to the public.
"This Maharishi Vedic Center has an extremely important role to play
for the United States," notes Bob, "due to its close proximity
to the Nation's Capital, and even closer proximity to residences of many
of the nation's top government and business leaders."
