The Eternal Music of Nature
by Renee Bonaparte Erickson

"It is fortunate for the world that the Gandharva Veda musicians of this generation have preserved the beautiful science and art of creating balance in Nature through music.

"Gandharva Veda music is a precious discipline of Vedic Science, the complete science of life. It sends forth those powerful melodies and rhythms of Nature to purify the atmosphere, thereby neutralizing negative trends and tendencies in the environment and promoting orderly evolution of life.

"Through their daily performance around the world of the eternal music of Nature, the Gandharvans of India—the land of the Veda—are creating harmony in world consciousness and thereby perpetuating world peace and bringing Heaven on Earth." —Maharishi

One of the most delightful approaches of Maharishi Vedic Science is the creation of harmony, balance, and peace through music. In 1986, Maharishi revived Gandharva Veda as a technology to create world peace. Gandharva Veda is the aspect of Vedic Literature which enlivens the integrating and harmonizing qualities of intelligence.

Maharishi inspired the master musicians of India to travel throughout the world performing the classical ragas (melodies) of traditional Indian music. The purpose of the tours was to create a global influence of coherence in world consciousness.

Many great musicians joined Maharishi’s Festival of Music to Create World Peace: Debu Chaudhuri playing the sitar; Rajan and Sajan Mishra, brothers who are two of India’s most beloved male vocalists; Shiv Kumar Sharma, performing on the santoor; and Tanima Thakur, a celebrated female vocalist.

Following the tours, Professor Debu Chaudhuri and other faculty videotaped a curriculum used by Maharishi Gandharva Veda students around the world.

Today we can enjoy Maharishi Gandharva Veda music at home, thanks to many beautiful recordings. A wide selection of ragas has been produced on audiotape and compact disk. One of the most magical performances is by Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia, an internationally acclaimed master of the bansuri, or bamboo flute.

Gandharva Veda music can be played 24 hours a day to generate a peaceful, soothing atmosphere that uplifts the whole environment, even when no one is present to listen!
